In November, the French Institute invites you to think digital

November 7, 2017 / November 30, 2017

Like many French Institutes around the world, we participate to the programme “Novembre numérique” (Digital November), “one month to discover digital cultures”.

We warmly invite you to join us for 2 debate nights that we will organize to discuss issues that are as topical as ever, in Estonia as well as in France : the concept of “post-truth” (November 7th), and the impact of digital on democracy (November 30th).

“Post-truth”: our new reality or just another fake news?

Where does this concept come from? Why such a paradox in an era of information and big data? What impacts on our societies? Can fake news be regulated?

  • Tuesday 7 November, 5:30pm
  • Kärbes Restaurant at Vaba Lava (Telliskivi 60a / Building C1)
  • Speakers: Thierry Vallat (lawyer based in Paris and Tallinn), Marju Himma-Kadakas (editior in chief of science portal at ERR and PhD candidate at University of Tartu) and Andrey Krashevskiy (journalistfor ERR News in Russian). Moderation by the French Institute.
  • Debate in English

Political representation in a digital age

How do politicians, academics and activists perceive the limits of representative democracy in 2017 and for the years to come? Can current institutions handle radically new practices? Will the civic tech hype really change politics?

  • Thursday 30 November, 6pm
  • NO99 Theatre (Sakala 3)
  • Speakers: Jean-Baptiste Djebbari (French Parliament), Marco Deseeris (Northeastern University, Boston), Pierre-Louis Rolle (French Ministry of Economics, OpenDemocracyNow), and Maija Jäske (University of Turku).
