French films at the Black Nights Film Festival

November 19, 2017 / December 3, 2017

Find out which French movies will be screened in Estonian cinemas on the occasion of the 21st edition of the Black Nights Film Festival!
  1. Montparnasse Bienvenue / Jeune femme

This first film by writer-director Léonor Serraille is full of snap and surprises as energetic scatterbrain Paula ricochets from situation to situation after getting dumped by a lover – her former teacher and prominent photographer Joachim – with whom she lived for a decade.
No normally constituted person would want to live with Paula, but it’s a memorable experience to share her life for 97 minutes of screen time. (excerpt : Lisa Nesselson, Screen International)

France, 2017
Director Léonor Serraille
Cast: Laetitia Dosch, Grégoire Monsaingeon, Souleymane Seye Ndiaye

2. Custody / Jusqu’à La Garde

An almost unbearably-tense, no-holds-barred drive through the nightmare of domestic terrorism, „Custody“ is a can’t-look-away hybrid of gruelling reality and heightened cinematic technique. The mix is jarring, as intended, and this wrenching, heart-stopping film illustrates domestic violence and obsession in a way that makes the fear real.  (excerpt : Fionnuala Halligan, Chief Film Critic, Screen Daily)

France, 2017
Director Xavier Legrand

But soon the boys decide to mutiny against the captain and soon find themselves on a supernatural island. Amidst verdant and fertile vegetation, the boys fall under the powers of the island and find themselves drawn into a web of intrigue which will be certain to change them forever.
