This week, we invite you to listen to Orelsan and the song “La pluie” (featuring the Belgian singer Stromae) from his album La fête est finie released in October 2017.

About Orelsan

Aurélien Cotentin, better known by his stage name Orelsan, is a French rapper, songwriter, producer and actor. Born in 1882, he was raised in Alençon by his mother, a teacher, and his father, a middle school principal. When he was a teenager, he discovered rap music with his basketball and skateboarding friends.

In 1998, his family moved to Caen, where he made friends with the record producer Skread (Matthieu Le Carpentier) and the rapper Gringe (Guillaume Tranchant), with who he collaborated and formed the duo Casseurs Flowters. After a French baccalaureat in economic and social sciences, he joined a management school where he graduated in 2004, before moving to Florida.

During his stay in the United States, Aurélien Cotentin composed many songs and adopted the stage name Orelsan. In 2006, he started to be known on the Internet with the songs “Ramen” and “Saint-Valentin” that he posted on YouTube, but his career started in 2008 with the song “Changement“. He released his first album Perdu d’avance in February 2009.

In 2012, Orelsan won two awards at Les Victoires de la Musique, in the categories “Group or Artist Popular Revelation of the Year” and “Urban Music Album of the Year”. In 2013, he was nominated in the category “French Revelation of the Year” at the NRJ Music Awards, but also in the category “Male Artist of the Year” at Les Victoires de la Musique.

The song

His third album La fête est finie was released in October 2017, six years after his second studio album (Le Chant des sirènes, September 2011). In 2018, Orelsan won three awards at Les Victoires de la Musique, including in the categories “Male Artist of the Year” and “Urban Music Album of the Year”.

In the song “La pluie” (literally “the rain”) featuring Stromae, Orelsan makes a criticism of the society. The rather nostalgic lyrics remind the two artists of their cities (Caen and Brussels, where it’s often raining) to say that life is beautiful despite the capricious weather.

The lyrics

[Orelsan]

[Stromae]
